Inventory status differs from protection

Inclusion in a scientific inventory does not itself impose specific duties. An established inventory has legal effects, generally narrower than formal protection. Since 2023, certain recognised heritage municipalities may establish their own inventories and consent requirements. Check the record, establishment date and municipality.

Formal protection goes further

A protection decision describes the values, features and management objectives to preserve. Alterations may be possible, but some work needs an environmental permit or written heritage consent. Discuss proposals with the competent authority early in the design process.

Check the procedure for every intervention

For a building in an established inventory, some general permit exemptions for facade or roof work do not apply. On a protected monument, work exempt from an environmental permit may still need written heritage consent. Joinery, facades, interiors and setting warrant assessment by an architect experienced in heritage buildings.

Disclose the status early in a sale

On transfer of a property in an established inventory, the agreement or deed must mention the listing and its legal consequences. Protected heritage also carries advertising information duties. Assemble the inventory record or protection decision, permits, consents and restoration history so a buyer can understand both the property and its conditions.
